Head of Department

 

The Department of Architecture at Marmara University's Faculty of Architecture and Design was established on September 12, 2020, by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880.

While our department rests on the solid foundation of Marmara University's deep-rooted past and strong future, it also champions a robust architectural consciousness through its dedicated faculty, educational philosophy, academic-scientific perspective, and dynamism. Architecture, in its perceptible and conceptual aspects, is an ontological reflection of humanity. Every idea or action related to architecture leaves a mark on humanity's journey in the universe. In this regard, it carries at its core a significant responsibility and awareness.

Our department, in this context, emphasizes the holistic nature of architecture's conceptual and semantic dimensions and its integration with all fields it touches, including art, science, society, and professional practice. We aim to equip our students with the skill to interpret cultural, social, environmental, technological, economic, and political phenomena as inseparable parts of the design process. This is fostered within a system defined by the intellectual climate of the design studios, which form the backbone of architectural education. We aim to graduate them as architects who are sensitive to the natural, public, and historical environment, possess a high sense of social responsibility, and uphold professional ethics.

Furthermore, we operate on the principle that the ethics and honor of the architectural profession—given its direct impact on human life, space, the city, and society—can only be strengthened by professionals who bear a deep responsibility and awareness for these domains. With this approach, we aim for our students to be equipped with the ideas, voice, and skills to be proficient not only in the national context but also in the international arena.
